The Lung Foundation would like to congratulate NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner for announcing a NSW ban on smoking in outdoor eating areas which is being hailed as an historic step. On Tuesday Ms Skinner announced a suite of bans, including new legislation which would immediately stop smoking in playgrounds, public sports grounds, swimming pools, transport stops and entrances to public buildings.
"People don't like putting food in their mouths with smoke in the air, and this is something we are acknowledging," Jillian Skinner said.
"The aim of this is to reduce the number of people who are smoking, and to reduce the exposure to people, particularly children and families, of third-party tobacco smoke.
"So we've introduced a series of places where children and families congregate more frequently, which is why we've got parks, playgrounds, sporting fields and so on, and commercial outdoor dining areas."
The Lung Foundation supports these initiatives whole-heartedly and would like to see them rolled out nationally as soon as possible. We would be delighted if the NSW legislation could be implemented earlier than 2015.
“As the only organisation in Australia devoted to serving everyone with lung disease, we welcome these changes.” said Dr Robert Edwards, Chairman of The Australian Lung Foundation National Council, “We look forward to seeing them implemented as soon as possible”
We invite you to be interviewed as part of an important research project called “Lung Cancer Outcomes".
Cancer Council Queensland in collaboration with Cancer Council New South Wales and Griffith University is conducting a new program of research, called “Lung Cancer Outcomes” which is looking at the experiences of people who have been diagnosed with lung cancer, and how different views about lung cancer might influence this.
The purpose of this research is to understand the experiences of people diagnosed with lung cancer so that we can develop and improve the services available to patients now and in the future.
If you agree to take part, we would ask you to answer some questions about your health, lung cancer experiences and how you are faring since your diagnosis. Some questions will be asked over the telephone by study staff. Others will be asked in a written questionnaire that you can complete and return to the study team.
If you would like to know more about the “Lung Cancer Outcomes” study, please telephone the Project Manager, Alison Dowling on 07 3634 5324 or email

The Australian Lung Foundation has released a new resource designed for general practitioners managing patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Stepwise Management of Stable COPD is a one page graphic summary of evidence-based management interventions for COPD according to level of severity. Based on the COPD-X Plan: Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for the Management of COPD, this quick reference guide has been developed in response to requests from general practitioners.
Dr Kerry Hancock, Chair of the Foundation’s General Practitioners’ Advisory Group said: “Our aim in developing this resource was not to replace the COPD-X Plan, which is an important source of detailed information, but to provide a summary resource that is more compatible with the realities of daily clinical life in a busy practice.

The message is simple: every cigarette is a step closer to cancer.
Emphysema sufferer Mic Roberts, 49, wasn't lucky enough to have such public health messages around when he decided to start smoking. He is waiting for a lung transplant having lost 90 per cent of his lung function, and is on oxygen 24 hours a day.
"It doesn't just affect me, it affects my family, my friends, so it's pretty devastating," the father of four told reporters in Melbourne after the launch of the largest ever national tobacco campaign. "When I was 14, 15, and smoking down the footy oval at school or whatever, we were told 'Anyhow have a Winfield' (and) 'Come to Marlboro country'. "We were sucked in. "If I had my way I'd make every packet of cigarette black with the word death on it - then you know what you're buying."
The $61 million advertising campaign launched on Sunday highlights coughing up blood can be one of the first signs of lung cancer.

Karen Munro competes in endurance event for lung cancer.
Karen Munro’s feet hardly touched the ground following her “Ride hard to breathe easy” challenge and she had signed up for a 24-hour endurance competition to raise vital lung cancer funds for The Australian Lung Foundation.
North Fitzroy’s new fitness workshop The SpinRoom is calling on cyclists to team up with Karen Munro for a 24-hour endurance competition to raise funds for lung cancer research.
The SpinRoom has created this event to support Melbourne track cyclist Karen Munro, a lung cancer sufferer who recently rode from Adelaide to Melbourne to raise awareness and money for lung cancer.
Karen, a never smoker, was diagnosed last February with Stage IV (inoperable) lung cancer. She is making it her mission to educate Australians that you don’t have to smoke to get lung cancer.
SpinRoom owner Sam Stapleton said all money raised will be donated to Karen’s Ride Hard to Breath Easy Campaign for the Australian Lung Foundation.
The enduro event will kick off at midday on Saturday 26th and will run until Sunday 27 February at 732 Nicholson Street, Fitzroy North at The SpinRoom.
