Background

The Australian Lung Foundation / Boehringer Ingelheim COPD Fellowship supports research to improve the diagnosis and management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Australia. Specifically, the proposed research must be aimed at developing and/or delivering optimal care to people with COPD.

Relevant domains of research inquiry range from evaluation of population screening initiatives; interventions to improve diagnostic accuracy within primary care; through to issues of management in the context of a clinician-patient interaction to system level issues to do with the organisation, financing and performance of the health system, including COPD management of indigenous and ethnic minorities within Australia.

The Australian Lung Foundation (Lung Foundation) invites applications from medical and scientific graduates who will be resident in Australia throughout the period of the research program.

The Fellowship is available as either a one or two year award, with a value of $A75,000 per annum, and is tenable in conjunction with additional financial support.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a financial member/associate member of The Australian Lung Foundation and the Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand.

Conditions

•1.    The recipient is required to submit a final report to the Lung Foundation within 3 months of the end of the Fellowship term, in accordance with the award guidelines.

•2.    For those recipients awarded a 2 year Fellowship; an interim report must be submitted within 12 months demonstrating significant progress with the research project to secure the ongoing funding in the second year.

•3.    The Fellowship will be awarded at the next Annual Scientific Meeting of the TSANZ and must be taken up within 12 months of receipt.

•4.    The recipient is required to submit the results of the research for presentation at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the TSANZ within 12 months of completion.

•5.    Any publication(s) arising from this research should acknowledge The Australian Lung Foundation / Boehringer Ingelheim COPD Research Fellowship as a source of support.

•6.    In the event of there being no suitable applicants, the Grant-in Aid may not be awarded.

•7.    Applicants must submit their application in both electronic and in hard copy, including:

•i)      Completed Application Form including project details and budget which will detail how funding from this award will be spent;

•ii)     Curriculum vitae.

Applications

The Education & Research Sub-Committee of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) will assess all applications. External expert assessment may be sought by the Education & Research Sub-Committee. Applications will be assessed using the following scoring system:
