The Australian Lung Foundation Lung Cancer Program

2010 Undergraduate Grant-in-Aid for Lung Cancer Research

Background

This grant is valued at $A2,500 and is specifically designed to assist either a medical or allied health (including Nursing) undergraduate in undertaking a research project into lung cancer. The project can focus on any aspect of the disease and /or its management; however this should not be a systematic review as other awards are available for this.

It is envisaged that the project would be conducted during a designated undergraduate research elective period (or equivalent) or possibly as a component of a Bachelor of Medical Science degree.

Suitable research projects would include:

*       a clinical outcomes audit

*       a pilot study of a primary research question

*       assist with data collection

*       offset other ancillary or personnel costs incurred

The successful applicant would be encouraged to submit their work for publication in a suitable medical journal.

Conditions

•1.    The grant will be competitive and open to both Australian and New Zealand citizens/residents.

•2.    Applications should include a summary of the rationale for the study, the scientific design, intended duration and whether or not it has gained ethics approval.

•3.    The successful applicant will be required to submit a progress report six (6) months into the project and a final report at the conclusion of the project. Monies will be paid on the basis of 75% at the time of signing documentation and the balance on acceptance of the final report.

•4.     The name and contact details of the principal project supervisor shall be included in the application. Applications also to include a support letter from principal project supervisor.

•5.     The principal project supervisor is required to sign off on interim and final reports.

•6.    Grantees are expected to commence their project early in the year of the award.

•7.    If the Award is not taken up within twelve (12) calendar of months of being awarded, the monies will be forfeited.

•8.    The Australian Lung Foundation is to be advised of any publications arising from this award. Any publication(s) arising from this research should acknowledge The Australian Lung Foundation Postgraduate Grant-in-Aid for Lung Cancer Research as a source of support.

•9.    Previous recipients of this Award will not be eligible if they have received this Award consecutively over two years.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a financial member/associate member of The Australian Lung Foundation and the Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand.

Applications

Applications will be assessed by the Education & Research Sub-Committee of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand. The judging criteria for the submitted application will be:
