Asbestos Research Fund Grant-in-Aid - 2009 / 2010

Value $A30,000

Aim

This award is designed to further advance curative, palliative or preventative treatment options for those burdened with asbestos related diseases.

Background

The Australian Lung Foundation / Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund Grant-in-Aid shall be to the value of A$30,000 for one (1) year. It may be used to support technical staff and/or the purchase of equipment and/or consumables necessary to establish or support a respiratory research project and/or contribute towards the applicant's salary.

The research must relate specifically to asbestos related diseases and be conducted in Australia or New Zealand. The Australian Lung Foundation / Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund Grant-in-Aid will be awarded at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the TSANZ and must be taken up within 12 months of receipt.

In the event of there being no suitable applicants, The Australian Lung Foundation / Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund Grant-in-Aid may not be awarded.

Conditions

•1.    This grant will be competitive and open to both Australian and New Zealand citizens/residents.

•2.    Applications should include a summary of the rationale for the study, the scientific design, intended duration and whether or not it has gained ethics approval.

•3.    The successful applicant will be required to submit a progress report six (6) months into the project and a final report at the conclusion of the project. Monies will be paid on the basis of 75% at the time of signing documentation and the balance on acceptance of the final report.

•4.    The name and contact details of the principal project supervisor shall be included in the application. Applications also to include a support letter from principal project supervisor.

•5.    The principal project supervisor is required to sign off on interim and final reports.

•6.    Grantees are expected to commence their project early in the year of the award.

•7.    If the Award is not taken up within twelve (12) calendar of months of being awarded, the monies will be forfeited.

•8.    The Australian Lung Foundation is to be advised of any publications arising from this award. Any publication(s) arising from this research should acknowledge The Australian Lung Foundation / Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund Grant-in-Aid as a source of support.

•9.    Previous recipients of this Award will not be eligible if they have received this Award over two (2) consecutive years.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a financial member/associate member of The Australian Lung Foundation and the Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand.

Applications will be assessed by the Education & Research Sub-Committee of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand. The judging criteria for the submitted application will be:
