‘Despite the increasing number of cases, swine flu remains similar to seasonal flu in that people with lung conditions are more likely to contract a more severe attack of swine flu and healthy people are more likely to experience a relatively mild bout,’ said President of The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ), Professor Philip Thompson, and Chairman of The Australian Lung Foundation (Lung Foundation), Dr Bob Edwards. In a joint media statement, Professor Thompson and Dr Edwards said the vast majority of cases in Australia continue to be relatively mild with relatively few deaths; and cases requiring hospitalisation have generally been associated with co-morbidities including lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema / chronic bronchitis), rare lung diseases, asthma, chronic cardio respiratory disease, gross obesity, diabetes as well as pregnancy and infancy.
