Jack Evans of Armidale has decided to turn his passion for car restoration into an awareness raising campaign for COPD. Jack lost his dear wife Gill in June 2006 after she had battled Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease for some 16 years. Gill was on 24 hour oxygen for the last five years of her life.
Jack, father of five and grandfather of nine, has been restoring Triumph motor cars for nearly 30 years and bought the wreck of a Triumph Super Seven 35 years ago which has sat in his back shed for decades. After many hours of laborious work, the Triumph Super Seven is now completed and Jack intends to commemorate the journey taken by Percival Armstrong and his colleague George Manley. Armstrong and Manley drove from Perth across the Nullarbor to Sydney in 1929 in just eight and a half days in the same make and model car. This epic journey by Armstrong was to prove that the Triumph was more than just "a nice little town car". On the 80th anniversary of the trek, Jack will be travelling with his daughter Alison and intends to make many stops along the journey to raise awareness about COPD and hopefully also raise much needed funds to assist the ongoing support and services provided by The Australian Lung Foundation.
Jack intends to drive his Triumph from Armidale to Adelaide where the car will continue its journey to Perth via Motorail on The Indian Pacific. The departure from Perth is scheduled for 10.30am on Sunday October 11, 2009. The launch will take place at the Whiteman Park Motor Museum and Jack's trek will include the following locations: Perth - Kalgoorlie - Norseman - Eucla - Ceduna - Port Augusta - Peterborough - Broken Hill - Cobar - Nyngan - Narromine - Dubbo - Gilgandra - Coonabarabran - Gunnedah - Tamworth and home to Armidale. Jack will be undertaking this trek unaided and without any support vehicle / crew.
Sponsorship from Shannons Insurance, Great Southern Rail, and TopDog Advertising has been secured and The Australian Lung Foundation will be supporting Jack with the provision of car signage, brochures, t-shirts, bumper stickers and the like. We will be calling on all support groups and interested parties along the journey to rally their support and welcome Jack and Alison.
