How to organize a local Walk for COPD Print E-mail

Walk for COPD and Catch your BreathThe idea for this event comes from Susan Peterson, a respiratory community nurse with Melbourne Easy Breathers. This coordinated event is aimed at getting as many people as possible out walking to raise awareness of COPD and to get the message out that there are things one can do to reduce breathlessness. It doesn't matter how far or little people can walk. We will add up the distances walked by each participant across the country. Every little bit counts.

The walking event might be held in a park with walkers doing laps beginning and ending at an information table. It might be at a local shopping centre or even at a track. The only suggestion is that groups are able to measure out distances and that you keep a record of distances completed so that we can tally up the total number of kilometres walked on the day.

We hope this event will encourage people to get out and walking! It also lends itself well to the media and we hope that more photographers will come out! It's easy:

  • Agree with your group to organise a walking event

  • To obtain a copy of the Group Registration form, Resource Order form and T-shirt order form, please contact Karen Wright on 07 3251 3637 or via email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

  • Find a pleasant spot to walk - a park or a shopping centre

  • Measure out some distances - 25 m, 50 m, 100 m, 300 m, 500 m

  • Invite a local politician or celebrity to participate

  • Invite local journalists

  • Set up an information desk for passers by to let them know about COPD

  • Get as many of your group out on the day to walk the distance they are able

  • Log the distances walked by your group members

  • Submit this to the ALF - Let's see how far we get collectively!
