Roslyn Hogan Early Detection Research Grants 1 Year, 6 Months ago
Two research grants into the Early Detection of Lung Cancer were presented by ALF fundraiser Mrs Roslyn Hogan at last's week Australian Lung Cancer Conference on the Gold Coast.

Mrs Hogan presented the awards to Dr Phan Nguyen from the Royal Brisbane Hospital and Dr Daniel Steinfort from the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A four year survivor of advanced lung cancer, Mrs Hogan, raised $30,000 at a charity lunch and donated the funds to early detection research.

Australian Doctors' Orchestra 1 Year, 6 Months ago
At the close of the 2nd Australian Lung Cancer Conference last weekend, more than 130 members of the Australian Doctors' Orchestra(ADO) gathered on the Gold Coast to present an unlifting program of classical music to a delighted audience of more than 400 music lovers - all in aid of the Australian Lung Foundation (ALF).

Performing for the first time on the Gold Coast, The ADO,
a community orchestra of 130 medical students, doctors and medical specialists delivered a breathtaking recital of Beethovon, Rachmaninov and Holst to a mesmerised audience.

Each year ADO members gather together from all over Australia to perform for charity. The doctors rehearse intensely for two days and then perform a two hour charity recital.

Such was the level of commitment amongst ADO members, that one doctor rescheduled her research presentation to meet her ADO rehearsal commitments.

The ADO concert was an inspirational conclusion to a successful conference.

CONSUMER TOOLKIT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT 1 Year, 6 Months ago
CONSUMER TOOLKIT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Initial Information for Support Groups
Version 1: 8/8/08

Researchers seeking help to develop information resource for people with advanced cancer and their families and caregivers

People with cancer and their caregivers may have a range of unmet needs in relation to physical, emotional, social and spiritual issues. Unfortunately, not everybody receives the type of help they need with such issues at the time they most need it.

A national team of researchers from The Cancer Council NSW, the University of Newcastle, the Hunter Medical Research Institute and Flinders University will be developing a "Consumer Toolkit" to help people with cancer and their caregivers identify their own needs and to discuss the most suitable type of care with their health professionals. The Toolkit would include information about cancer, the types of care available and when it might be most appropriate to access other health services.

The researchers are keen to hear the views of people who have advanced cancer, their partners and caregivers, about what information the Toolkit should include and how best to present this information so that it is most useful. If you want to know more about this project or you are keen to participate, please telephone us on 1800 766 016, or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Re:Welcome 1 Year, 6 Months ago
Hi All,

I would like to thank Kerrie for getting this forum up and running. I have had some initial difficulty logging on.

However, now it is all smooth sailing and I hope to see some familiar postees from Lungevity and many other new ones.

I would really like to get a lung cancer support group going in Brisbane - are there any others out there who would like to join?
Regards,

Lizzie

Re:Welcome 1 Year, 6 Months ago
Hi everyone as you see i'm new to this forum. My name is Lynda, i have non small cell lung cancer & currently having chemo treatment with Alimta. It is going well so far.
What i would like to tell you though is this Sun my friends in the Ulysses club decided we should have a lunch for lungs. We ride motorbikes, are very tame as we are a social group. They are calling it the Wild 08 ride. A morning tea has been organised followed by a BBQ lunch at the end of the ride. The girls have been making frog wheat bags, knitted bears & dogs & fancy lolly bags. Last i heard they had raised $700 before the event. I have just been told to make an appearance as the guest of honour so will take the opportunity to speak about the KJ Foundation & coming events for the lung foundation. We know this is earlier than most have the event but it was when it suited everyone.
Regards
Lynda

Wild 08 Ride 1 Year, 5 Months ago
Dear Lynda and friends

Thank you for your inspiring message. We wish you all the best for your Wild 08 Ride - sounds very invigorating! Sounds like your group have put a lot of love and thought into your day long celebration - amazing to think you have already started raising funds before the event!

Please let your community of supporters know that funds raised this year will go towards the establishment of a clinical nurse on a National 1800 number to provide person to person support to people living with lung cancer.

I'm happy to report that the Heritage Building Society here is Queensland is promoting Lunch for Lung Cancer events as a Melbourne Cup celebration throughout their 60 branches.

Please give us a run down on how your Wild Ride goes.

All the best

Kerrie Callaghan

Hi Lynda,

I also responded well to Alimta - am Stage 4 NSCLC. Have had it at 3 different times and recently added Avastin to it to make it even more effective. Avastin, though, is expensive.
Love your Wild Ride idea - bit like life really, isn't it?

Cheers,
Live Strong.

Lizzie
