Multi-Centre Clinical Trials Network
The Lung Foundation, a National not-for-profit community based organisation, established the Multi-centre Clinical Trials Network (MCTN) in 1998. This service works with leading research companies and provides access to fully qualified Investigator site(s) and assists with finding suitable patients predominately in the area of Lung Disease.
For Patients
In early 2009, the Lung Foundation recognised the need to establish a system that would provide information and educate the general community about clinical trials. This need led to the Lung Foundation developing the MCTN Patient Community. Within the Patient Community, patients can:
- Register their interest in participating in clinical trials
- Access information about clinical trials
- View clinical trials that are currently being conducted in Australia and New Zealand
- Completer a feasibility questionnaire to see if they are potentially suitable
For more information, visit the Patient Community.
For Doctors
The MCTN Investigator Community was established as a service for Doctors to register their interest in conducting sponsored clinical trials. Doctors are able to register and maintain their own details, search for trials that are recruiting Investigator sites and potentially work with internationally known organisations. By registering, Doctors may potentially assist their patients in gaining access to treatments not currently available.
The MCTN Investigator Community does not conduct clinical trials but assists in matching Investigators with sponsors who are recruiting Investigator sites. MCTN Community will provide administrative assistance and support to Investigators prior to the commencement and for the duration of the trial. On an International basis, Australia and New Zealand are viewed as “countries of choice” for conducting clinical research, both in terms of the logistics involved, as well as the excellent standard of clinical conduct that exists in this country, which in turn boosts confidence with the scientific conclusions reached.

For Sponsors
The MCTN is an established administration service, available to both Clinical Trial Sponsors and Contract Research Organisations (CROs). The service can provide access to both a large-scale Investigator network and a patient database. MCTN is supported by an efficient and timely ethics submission process, underpinned by an established subject recruitment campaign management system and was formed to support both Local and International studies.
The service does not compete with Institutions that undertake clinical trials, but aims to enhance the recruitment base so that, collectively, recruitment targets and tight study timelines can be met. On an International basis, Australia and New Zealand are viewed as “countries of choice” for conducting clinical research, both in terms of the logistics involved, as well as the excellent standard of clinical conduct that exists in this country, which in turn boosts confidence with the scientific conclusions reached.
